National Injury Prevention Programs

National Trauma Awareness Month
The American Trauma Society was instrumental in having May of each year designated as National Trauma Awareness Month by President Ronald Reagan and Congress in 1988. Since then, ATS has worked with other trauma organizations, some of which have included CDC, NHTSA, EMSC, USSG, SafeKids, National Safety Council, MADD, and the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) to develop injury prevention and trauma awareness materials for use by our members in their communities.

Violence and Injury Prevention (VIP)
Injuries are not only a public health threat for the United States. Injuries also pose a huge threat to adults and children across the globe. The World Health Organization’s VIP programs and information center collect many useful materials on global injury data, programs, and much more.

CDC Injury Center
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Injury Center works to prevent injuries and violence in the United States. Through leadership, federally funded projects and programs, data studies, and more, they are at the forefront of injury and violence prevention strategies.

Healthy People 2020 – Injury and Violence
Healthy People 2020 is a national 10-year agenda aimed at improving health across the country. It provides objectives, establishes benchmarks, and monitors progress of prevention programs. One of the “Leading Health Indicators, LHI” is Injury and Violence. Healthy People provides data, resources, and program materials aimed at preventing injury and violence in the United States.
