ATS Conference Speakers 2022

 


The American Trauma Society is pleased to offer a comprehensive program which features nationally recognized leaders in the trauma community, advocacy and legislation, EMS, and beyond.  Each represents a unique discipline to offer ATS Conference attendees with a robust and holistic approach to trauma, advocacy, and change within our trauma systems today.


 

Christopher Barsotti, MD, FACEP, FAAEM

Dr. Barsotti is a practicing emergency physician serving patients in western Massachusetts, southern Vermont, and upstate New York, caring for patients with firearm-related risks and injuries. Dr. Barsotti is the co-founder and former CEO of the American Foundation for Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine (AFFIRM), a non-profit organization established in 2017 with the goal of reducing firearm injuries in the United States through health-based, non-partisan approaches.

 

Karen F. Clements, BSN, MSB, MHCDS, RN, FACHE

Karen Clements has been the Chief Nursing Officer of Dartmouth-Hitchcock since June of 2016. She joined Dartmouth Hitchcock in July of 2013 and has held several pivotal roles within the medical center. Karen is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a Governor for ACHE and the past Regent for New Hampshire and the past President of the Northern New England Chapter. Karen proudly served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from 1988-1999. 

 

 

 

 

John Fildes, MD, FACS, FCCM, FPCA (Hon)

Dr. Fildes was the Medical Director of the Trauma Center and Chief of the Department of Trauma and Burns at the University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas (1996-2019). UMC is Nevada’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, only Pediatric Trauma Center, and only Burn Center. Dr. Fildes was a leader in the medical response to the One October Shootings in Las Vegas. He continues to be a One October spokesperson at the regional, national, and international level. In addition, he is a consultant to DHS, FEMA, CDP, HHS, OS, ASPR, and EMMO who are developing a disaster-training program for the medical response to a no notice, overwhelming, large-scale, mass shooting event.  

 

 

 

Kyle Fischer, MD, MPH

Dr. Fischer is currently the policy director for the HAVI. He began work with the organization as the policy liaison for the NNHVIP as well as a member of the Advisory Board. In addition to his work with the HAVI, he continues to practice emergency medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he is a clinical assistant professor and the director of the department’s Health Policy and Leadership Fellowship program.

 

 

 

Elaine Frank, BA, MHS

Elaine Frank is an Injury Prevention and Public Health professional who has focused her recent work at the intersection of Firearm Safety and Suicide Prevention. She is the co-developer of CALM – Counseling on Access to Lethal Means – and Co-chair of the NH Firearm Safety Coalition that created the Gun Shop Project and other efforts to engage the firearm community in preventing suicide.

 

 

Susan Kennedy, RN, BSN

Susan is currently serving as the Senior Director Trauma, Burn, and SCCS
Medstar Washington Hospital Center., Washington, DC.  Susan has been a staff member at Washington Hospital Center since 1987, starting as a staff nurse and working successfully up through the ranks in the trauma program.  Susan is a member of the ATS Board of Directors as well as a long time faculty lead for the Trauma Registry Course.  In addition, Susan has been published and presented nationally including, "A Life in the Balance, The Steve Scalise Story", a keynote session at the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy. 

 

Chief (retired) Richard Mello

Chief (retired) Mello has been serving as the Director of Security for Dartmouth-Hitchcock since June of 2021. Previously, he served as the Chief of Police for the Lebanon, NH Police Department and retired in 2021 after nearly 30 years in law enforcement. Chief Mello served 12 years in the United States Navy, 8 of which in the Navy Intelligence Community. Chief Mello has successfully merged his law enforcement and military experience with his leadership and management expertise. 

 

Simon G. Talbot , MD

Dr. Talbot is a board certified plastic and hand surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in general plastic surgery, hand surgery, and microsurgery. Dr. Talbot is heavily involved in optimizing patient care through a focus on physician wellbeing: lecturing, writing, and consulting nationally. He and his collaborator, Wendy Dean, brought the concept of moral injury to the area of healthcare and their work has now been downloaded over 300,000 times.
 

Aswad Thomas, BA, MSW

On August 24, 2009, Aswad was just three weeks from going to Europe to play professional basketball when his life changed forever. Aswad became a victim of gun violence. Aswad’s life was saved and after years of physical and emotional pain, he started a new chapter in his life by becoming one of nation's most outspoken supporters for victims of gun violence. Currently serves as the Managing Director at Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice, a flagship project of Alliance for Safety and Justice; He is organizing a national network of crime survivors to include those most commonly affected by violence (including young men and women of color) to help elevate those voices in local, state and federal policymaking debates.

 

Pina Violano, RN, BSN, PhD

Pina Violano is the newly appointed Visiting Assistant Professor and Director of Community Engagement at Quinnipiac University’s School of Nursing and Owner and CEO of Healthcare Consultants, LLC. She previously served as Manager, Injury & Violence Prevention Program at Yale’s Adult & Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Centers. Pina is a member of the ATS Board of Directors and Chair of the Conference Planning Committee.
