Welcome From The Executive Director

Dear Friends,

For the past 50 years, The American Trauma Society (ATS) has dedicated itself to the elimination of needless death and disability from injury. Since its inception, the ATS has served as an advocate for  trauma care systems, trauma prevention programs, trauma care providers, trauma victims and their families throughout the United States. Our goals are to prevent injury whenever possible, and to ensure optimal treatment of trauma when it does occur.

The ATS has aligned its focus with that of today’s healthcare profession including the dual goals of optimal health outcomes and improved patient satisfaction. All of us, whatever our role in trauma care, would like to see the elimination of injury—certainly preventable injury. We must also be realistic and  know that  injuries will occur and when they do, our work kicks in. At the ATS we exist to serve our trauma care institutions, trauma professionals, patients, and their families to ensure excellence in trauma care, from injury prevention through survivor support.

As we move forward, we will continue to offer top quality education courses through our nationally recognized ATS Trauma Registrar Course, ATS Trauma Program Manager Course and ATS Injury Prevention Coordinator Course. Our 2nd Trauma Course addresses a vital need of families—good communication with members of the trauma team. This course, which has been well received by hospitals, meets the needs of hospital residency programs to teach several of the core competencies of the American College of Graduate Medical Education.

Our Trauma Survivors Network (TSN) continues to grow as it addresses the emotional needs of survivors and their families coping with not only the hospital stay but the rebuilding their lives after the medical care has ended. The TSN was built based on the express needs of patients and their families. At the ATS we understood that these vital links in the continuum of care needed to be systematically addressed. Today the ATS has a full time coordinator serving the growing number of institutions that realize the value of providing programs and resources that aid patients and families in managing their recovery.

ATS has always had the trauma patient as its centerpiece. ATS will continue to be a strong advocate for injury prevention, trauma education, survivor support and the trauma care system to ensure the best trauma care is available throughout the nation.

On behalf of the ATS Board of Directors and the ATS National Office Staff, we thank you for visiting our website. We look forward to assisting you.

Sincerely,

Suzanne M. Prentiss, BA. MPA, NRP
