Trauma Prevention Coalition Releases

Joint Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Statement

Oct. 25, 2022 (Falls Church, Va.) – A coalition of eleven major professional trauma organizations have released a joint statement outlining measures they seek to support to improve Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention. Focused on eleven key recommendations, the Trauma Prevention Coalition (TPC) believes the measures are fundamental and necessary to a continuous and comprehensive approach to address this public health crisis.

“I believe there is strength in our joining voices in focusing attention on this serious public health emergency facing our nation,” stated Dr. Deborah Kuhls, MD, FACS, chair of the Trauma Prevention Coalition since 2019. Kuhls shared that the coalition took its time to identify the areas each organization shared while respecting the areas where differences may exist. Getting this statement ready for release involved months of meetings and careful consideration of all perspectives.

The eleven organizations that worked on the development and signed onto this statement include the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, American College of Surgeons–Committee on Trauma, American Trauma Society, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Pediatric Trauma Society, Society of Trauma Nurses, Trauma Center Association of America, Injury Free Coalition for Kids, Safe States Alliance, ThinkFirst, and The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention.

The TPC combines the resources of major professional organizations that address the acute healthcare needs of the injured to promote collaborative efforts and develop effective strategies targeting injury and violence prevention while minimizing redundancy. The American Trauma Society serves as the administrative home to the TPC. For more information on TPC and to read the statement in full click here.
