The American Trauma Society (ATS) has dedicated 51 years to its mission of “Saving Lives, Improving Care, and Empowering Survivors.” We recognize the importance of our core mission now more than ever as our nation responds to the death of another African American man at the hands of law enforcement. Today we are experiencing the impact of long-term structural racism expressed by this and so many other acts of unjustifiable brutality before it, and the deeper influence on public health disparities in America.

As members of the trauma community, we know injury when we see it and how to care for it. The injury we are living with now is more difficult: while not entirely invisible, it has gone unseen and unrecognized, and we have yet to reach agreement on how we can justly treat it.

Our trauma systems are responding to the violence sweeping our neighborhoods. As an organization, we recognize the pain and fear our members, and especially our African American members are feeling. We want and need to learn how we can best support you as we strive together to save lives, improve care, and empower survivors. We want you to know that we are here for you and stand with you.
