Thank you, Eileen. I am both a trauma survivor and a nurse who has cared for trauma patients and their families. Experiencing firsthand both perspectives has broadened my understanding of the stages of grief following a traumatic injury/event and the potentially devastating impact it can have on lives. I firmly believe in the need for more education for all providers in the continuum of care of the trauma patient. Although the event may be the same for two survivors, the severity of impact and survivor response can vary significantly due to “life” situations and is multifactorial. Many struggle silently for years after the event. Signs of PTSD are so often overlooked or misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety. Treatment opportunities are missed and the ill effects of the trauma (responses) are harbored for a lifetime, spilling over into relationships and generations to come. Thank you again for your insight.
