The ICD-10 External Cause Coding of Morbidity for Traumatically Injured Patients Course is an American Trauma Society exclusive course powered by Trauma Analytics. This is a unique and comprehensive coding course. The course design provides all attendees with the resources, tools, and knowledge to ensure accurate and reliable external cause of injury ICD-10 coding. The course teaches the Chapter 20 conventions, guidelines, and coding concepts. Through practical hands-on group exercises, attendees apply learned knowledge and coding techniques. During an interactive group workshop module learning attendees assign Chapter 20 codes to scenarios commonly seen by trauma nurses, injury coders, and trauma registry professionals. The ICD-10 Course is taught in a two-day format broken down into instructional units. Each unit contains a combination of educational elements which include: unit overview and objectives, content presentations, readings, PowerPoint lectures, videos, course activities, course coding assignments, and review questions. The primary vehicle for learning is through our online web based learning system which attendees gain access prior to, during, and after the course concludes. Important Information: It is strongly recommended that attendees first complete the ATS ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding course or an equivalent. Optimal learner experience requires understanding on application of general coding conventions, guidelines and concepts for code assignment for the ICD-10 code set.
Attendees are permitted use of any reliable coding tool (3M, Optum, Printed Code books, or other choice) provided the tool allows for application of all CMS Official ICD-10 Coding and Billing Guideline conventions or Chapter 20 guidelines for code assignment. ICD10data.com is NOT recommended and does not meet these requirements. This tool does not provide the alphabetic index, nor any conventions applicable to the chapter and section of the code categories required for valid code assignment.
Instruction on proper use any specific coding tool is not included in this course, except the free CDC tool provided as a course resource! Upon completion of the ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding Course, the learner will be able to:
1. Identify the Conventions relevant to Chapter 20 ICD-10 CM codes 2. Identify the General Guidelines relevant to Chapter 20 ICD-10-CM codes 3. Identify the Chapter 20 specific guidelines 4. Examine the purpose of each sub-code category 5. Differentiate between Chapter, Section, or Category notes, conventions and guidelines 6. Discuss and Select documentation sources relevant to code assignment for Chapter 20
Upon completion of the ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding Course, the learner will receive:
12 Nursing Continuing Education (CE) contact hours are provided by California State Nursing CE approved provider Trauma Analytics. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP17125, for 12 contact hours. Prerequisite / Co-requisites
- Strongly recommended to have previously taken an ICD-10 Trauma Coding Course.
- A laptop or desktop computer capable of accessing the Trauma Analytics website
- High speed internet access
- Video camera and microphone access
- Strongly recommend double monitors for course
- The latest versions of Windows or Apple Mac OS X operating systems
- Ability to run Google Chrome and ability to download files including pdf, xlsx, and zip
- Attendees will be required to attend a technology check meeting prior to the course.
