The ATS ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding Course powered by Trauma Analytics is a unique one-of-a-kind trauma data coding course, which provides trauma clinicians nurses, trauma nurse registrars, and trauma registrars with the knowledge and tools to ensure accurate and reliable ICD-10 coding. Using accurate and reliable ICD-10 coding allows nurses and registrars to evaluate trauma clinical data to identify opportunities for system performance improvement and monitor patient outcomes. The course teaches ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS injury coding while identifying unique differences between ICD and injury severity coding. The course uses practical, hands-on coding examples and coding case study exercises to teach injury coding theory and application for trauma data. The class emphasizes ICD-10 specific coding guidelines and bridges the knowledge gap between ICD and injury severity coding application and techniques. At the end of this course trauma registry professionals will maintain a stronger understanding of ICD-10 trauma clinical data coding for incorporation with facility performance improvement activities, trending reports, and trauma research.
The ICD-10 Course is taught in a two-day format broken down into instructional units. Each unit contains a combination of educational elements which include: unit overview and objectives, content presentations, readings, PowerPoint lectures, videos, course activities, course coding assignments, and review questions. The primary vehicle for learning is through our online web based learning system which attendees gain access prior to, during, and after the course concludes. Registration includes a Free verified reliable coding resource tool integrating all current version conventions and guidelines and BONUS access for 1-week to 3M Encoder which includes access to AHA Coding Clinic, Clinical Pharmacology Drug Reference, Dorland's Medical Dictionary, Elsevier's Anatomy Plates, Coding Reference Plus, ICD-10-CM Coding Handbook, ICD-10-PCS Coding Handbook, and Dictionary of Medical Acronyms and Abbreviations.
Upon completion of the ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding Course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify and explain the structure and organization of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
- Describe the most appropriate process for encoding abstracted injury data from medical charts to reach the most accurate ICD-10 code
- Effectively use ICD-10 codes and coding tools to achieve accurate and reliable code data
- Understand the importance of accurate and reliable ICD-10 coding impact on the nurses and trauma registrar’s ability to evaluate trauma clinical data to identify opportunities for system performance improvement and monitor patient outcomes.
- Understand the difference between ICD-10 and injury severity coding rules when data abstracting and when to apply coding rules based off anatomical body regions and published coding guidelines
- Identify clinical objectives of procedures to ensure proper coding
- Understand the differences between ICD-10 and other coding scales used for injury coding
- Effectively select correct ICD-10 codes for monitoring trauma clinical performance improvement activities, trending reports, and clinical research
Upon completion of the ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding Course, the learner will receive:
