Armed Services Blood Program | Donor Prescreening and Walking Blood Bank

Join the ATS and Welcome Back to Major Crystal Davis as we explore the second of our Armed Services Blood Program series. This session focuses on preparedness for large-scale events and the need for emergent blood. Walking blood banks, or the collection of blood from prescreened donors in emergencies, provides a method of averting death from hemorrhage during events when considerable injury is imminent or Food and Drug Compliant blood is not attainable. The military has relied on walking blood banks during multiple conflicts since 2001 to avert hemorrhage on the battlefield, specifically for special operations teams where significant injury is highly probable.

Through lessons learned and in consideration of the challenges during a large-scale conflict, military policy for donor screening and walking blood bank will expand beyond special operation forces to conventional forces to bolster walking blood bank capabilities. This presentation will reflect on the history of walking blood banks and expand into the military’s pending policy to capitalize on screened and willing blood donors during conflict.
