Join the American Trauma Society and American College of Surgeons for an upcoming Trauma Registry Education Webinar on Tuesday, August 23rd 2016 from 2:00-3:00pm EST

"You’re Just Not My (Trauma) Type: Matching ICD-10-CM External Cause Codes to Blunt/Burn/Penetrating."

In the National Trauma Data Standard (, values for Trauma Type (e.g., Blunt, Penetrating, Burn, Other/unspecified or Not Applicable) are determined based on the external cause codes provided by trauma registrars. Mapping from external cause to Trauma Type allows consistency in assignment of Trauma Type in the National Trauma Data Bank. A map for converting ICD-9-CM external cause codes to Trauma Type has been in use for several years (insert link to NTDS website with current map – or see ).  As of October 1, 2015, the Department of Health and Human Services requires that all hospitals and health care providers covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPSS) use the Clinical Modification of the Tenth Revision of ICD (ICD–10–CM) to report medical information. With this change to ICD-10-CM, a new map to convert ICD-10-CM external cause codes to Trauma Type is needed.  Over the past few months representatives from the American College of Surgeons, the American Trauma Society, the U.S. Army Medical Command, the National Center for Health Statistics and other trauma registry experts collaborated to create the proposed ICD-10-CM External Cause to Trauma Type map.

This webinar will:
·         Introduce the new Trauma Type Mapping for the ICD-10-CM External Cause Code Matrix (Blunt/Burn/Penetrating)
·         Provide an overview of the mapping development process
·         Discuss and provide an understanding of the use of Trauma Type mapping within NTDB/TQIP
