The ATS ICD-10 Trauma Injury Coding Course, powered by Trauma Analytics, LLC, equips trauma clinicians, nurses, and registrars with the knowledge and tools needed to support accurate and reliable ICD-10 coding for trauma data. Accurate coding is essential for evaluating clinical data, identifying opportunities for performance improvement, and tracking patient outcomes across the continuum of care in the trauma system.

Through our hands-on approach to instruction, participants learn both ICD-10-CM (diagnosis) and ICD-10-PCS (procedure) injury coding while exploring the distinctions between ICD coding and injury severity scoring. Engaging case studies and coding exercises bridge theory with real-world application, strengthening understanding of trauma clinical data coding for incorporation with facility performance improvement activities, trending reports, and trauma research.

Delivered in a two-day interactive format, this course combines expert-led presentations, activities, videos, and review exercises delivered through an online learning platform accessible before, during, and after the course. Registration includes a verified coding resource tool and one-week access to the 3M Encoder, featuring resources such as the AHA Coding Clinic, Clinical Pharmacology Drug Reference, Dorland’s Medical Dictionary, Elsevier’s Anatomy Plates, and the ICD-10-CM/PCS Coding Handbooks.

Build your foundation in trauma coding and advance your role in data-driven trauma care.
  • Identify and explain the structure and organization of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
  • Describe the most appropriate process for encoding abstracted injury data from medical charts to reach the most accurate ICD-10 code
  • Effectively use ICD-10 codes and coding tools to achieve accurate and reliable code data
  • Understand the importance of accurate and reliable ICD-10 coding on the nurses' and trauma registrar’s ability to evaluate trauma clinical data to identify opportunities for system performance improvement and monitor patient outcomes.
  • Understand the difference between ICD-10 and injury severity coding rules when data abstracting and when to apply coding rules based on anatomical body regions and published coding guidelines
  • Identify clinical objectives of procedures to ensure proper coding
  • Understand the differences between ICD-10 and other coding scales used for injury coding
