In recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Month, this webinar will examine the current epidemiology of gun violence in the United States and the critical role data plays in understanding and preventing these injuries. Participants will explore key trends, risk factors, and populations most affected, as well as strategies that have shown success in reducing firearm-related harm.

Presenter:
Bethany Strong, MD, MS, FACS

Bethany Strong is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Trauma Surgeon at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center. Dr. Strong attended Spelman College for her undergraduate degree in Biology and minor Biochemistry. She completed her MD at Harvard Medical School in 2012 where she was active in the Student National Medical Association and student government. 

She completed her General Surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA in 2019. During her residency research time, Dr. Strong completed a Preventive Medicine residency at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. There she focused on injury and violence prevention through work at the Maryland Department of Health, Baltimore City Chief Medical Examiner Office and advocacy on Capitol Hill. She completed her Acute Care Surgery Fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in 2021. In addition to her current clinical role, she acts as the Medical Director of the CAP-VIP Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program. Dr. Strong is a board-certified Preventive Medicine physician, Surgeon and Critical Care intensivist working as an advocate for social change.
