Join the American Trauma Society for a Trauma Survivor Network Webinar!
Sept. 22, 2026 | 1:00 – 2:00 pm ET
Trauma systems have made remarkable advances in improving survival after injury. Yet for many patients, coordinated care largely ends at hospital discharge—even though recovery continues for months or years.
As trauma centers face increasing pressure to improve outcomes, expand access, address workforce shortages, and demonstrate value, a new question is emerging: What should trauma recovery infrastructure look like in the future?
Join leaders from UNC Health and TandemStride for a discussion on the evolution of trauma recovery programs and the development of the Trauma Recovery Command Center—a technology-enabled operational model designed to help trauma centers identify high-risk survivors, coordinate recovery across the continuum of care, and support larger patient populations through AI-enabled workflows and longitudinal recovery management.
Attendees will learn:
• Why trauma recovery is emerging as the next frontier of trauma care.
• The operational challenges facing Trauma Recovery Centers and survivorship programs.
• How technology and AI can help extend the reach of clinical teams.
• The vision behind the UNC RISE Trauma Recovery Center.
• Opportunities for research, collaboration, and the future of regional trauma recovery networks.
Whether your organization is building a Trauma Recovery Center, expanding survivorship services, or exploring innovative approaches to post-acute care, this session will provide a forward-looking perspective on the future of recovery after injury.
Presenters:
Thomas Stephenson, TandemStride, Chief of Staff
Matt Kalina, TandemStride, Founder, Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Jaclyn Portelli Tremont, MD MPH, University of North Carolina, Associate Trauma Medical Director, Medical Director R.I.S.E. Trauma Recovery Center
Thomas Stephenson is Chief of Staff at TandemStride, a healthcare technology company building the next generation of trauma recovery infrastructure. Since joining TandemStride at its founding in July 2024, Thomas has led trauma center & health plan partnership strategy with some of the nation's largest health systems and health insurance providers.
Thomas' career has been spent entirely in healthcare technology growth roles spanning clinical technology, AI and automation strategy, and direct contracting with large physician groups, before joining TandemStride.
His path into this work is personal. In 2014, Thomas survived a fatal motor vehicle accident outside Nashville and was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. That experience of trauma and recovery led him to co-found the TENNACITY Foundation in 2018, a Nashville-based nonprofit that extends physical rehabilitation services to trauma survivors after hospital discharge.
Thomas holds a B.A. in Political Science from Western Kentucky University and lives in Franklin, Tennessee with his wife and two children.
Matt Kalina is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TandemStride, a healthcare technology company focused on improving long-term outcomes for trauma survivors. TandemStride partners with trauma centers, health systems, and health plans to build scalable recovery infrastructure that extends care beyond hospital discharge through technology-enabled care coordination, patient engagement, and longitudinal recovery management.
Drawing on more than a decade of experience in healthcare technology and a personal connection to traumatic injury, Matt is helping pioneer the development of Trauma Recovery Command Centers, an emerging model designed to combine clinical teams, AI-enabled workflows, and population health infrastructure to support trauma survivors throughout their recovery journey. His work is focused on advancing trauma recovery as the next frontier of trauma care.
Matt's passion for this mission stems from his family's experience after his brother survived a catastrophic traumatic injury in 2012, inspiring the creation of the Mark Kalina Jr. Foundation and, ultimately, TandemStride.
Dr. Jaclyn Portelli Tremont, MD MPH is a trauma and acute care surgeon, Associate Trauma Medical Director, and Medical Director of the R.I.S.E. Trauma Recovery Center at the University of North Carolina. She is board-certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care and holds a Master of Public Health from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
Her clinical, research, and programmatic work focuses on improving long-term recovery after traumatic injury, particularly for patients experiencing psychological, social, and healthcare-access barriers. She has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to more than 20 national and regional presentations, including work examining social drivers of health, health literacy, trauma-informed care, recovery after traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, and disparities in post-injury outcomes.
Dr. Portelli Tremont has led the development of R.I.S.E. (Rebuild. Inspire. Support. Empower.) from a student-led navigation initiative into a comprehensive, multidisciplinary trauma recovery model. In partnership with TandemStride, she is translating that vision into a technology-enabled program designed to deliver coordinated and longitudinal support across the recovery continuum. Her work reflects a broader commitment to moving trauma systems beyond survival and discharge toward measurable, patient-centered long-term recovery.
