Injury Prevention & Partnership Activities in Trauma Centers
Level I and II trauma centers were surveyed to identify their current
injury prevention (IP) activities and to solicit feedback about barriers and
facilitators to trauma center involvement in IP activities.
Some key results are presented here and a publication is in preparation.
Who pariticipated?
- 455 level I and II trauma centers were surveyed
- 268 completed surveys (60%)
- Level I: 124/188 responded (66%)
- Level II: 144/257 responded (56%)
Selected Results
- Fewer than 20% of the trauma centers have a full time IP director or coordinator
- Nearly all trauma centers (over 95%) participate in community IP events
- Fewer than 20% of the trauma centers report funding for IP from government grants,
corporations, foundations, private donations or fee-for-service programs
- Factors rated as the top barriers to IP activities are
lack of time (68%) and lack of dedicated funding (67%)
- Over 85% of respondents want ATS and other professional organizations to identify
and promote model IP programs
Prizes for Participation
Four survey respondents were selected at random and were awarded one of these four prizes:

- Registration for the 2005 ATS National Trauma Conference
- One-year membership to ATS
- Scholarship to the 14th Annual Johns Hopkins Summer Institute on Principles and
