“Original Research Studies on the
Efficacy of Trauma Prevention Interventions”
Dear Trauma Colleague:
Trauma is the number-one killer of persons under the age of 40 in the United States. One of the key methods of reducing needless death and disability in trauma is an effective prevention program. The ATS Physicians’ Council has completed the eighth year of a grant program to study the efficacy of programs in trauma prevention. The funding available for the year 2004/2005 permits two research awards, each in the amount of $10,000. In the case of an exceptionally high quality proposal, funding of $20,000 for a single project is possible.
Grant proposals can be submitted for preliminary review by Nov. 1, 2004. Suggestions for improvement will be returned by Dec. 1, 2004. This service shall in no way serve as a guarantee of eventual approval for funding.
The Deadline for Receipt of all Grants is January 14, 2005
Guidelines
Each grant will be examined for scientific methodology, originality, and potential success in reducing death and disability, based on sound research design. In preparation for grant proposals, please consider the following guidelines:
1. This is a request for research proposals to study the efficacy of one or more trauma prevention programs or initiatives. Proposals to study trauma care or studies to document the need for trauma prevention will not be considered.
2. In most cases, studies to evaluate trauma prevention programs should be for programs in the United States or, in special cases, in countries bordering on the U.S. especially if the program has a direct bearing on the U.S.
3. Proposals with no overhead are preferred, but when required by the host institution, the committee will consider overhead costs up to a maximum of 10%.
4. Proposals with co-partnering funding support from host institution or other funders in regard to personnel compensation or in-kind support will be more favorably considered.
5. At least one of the principal investigators of the proposed study must be a current physician member of the American Trauma Society. Please document this in the grant proposal.
6. One of the principal investigators of each winning grant will be expected to present the results of his/her research project at the next annual meeting of the American Trauma Society after the study has been completed.
No formal written structure or format is necessary beyond the points listed already. An original and five copies of the proposal should be submitted to:

Criteria
The criteria that will be emphasized in the Physicians’ Council selection process include the following:
1. The significance or pertinence of the trauma problem and review of trauma research studies pertinent to the problem. The reviewers will give weight to whether the trauma problem under study is a major problem in trauma or a minor problem. For example, motor vehicle trauma is a major problem compared to equestrian trauma, which is a minor problem.
2. The scientific credentials of the investigators, including past research, published and non-published, in trauma and trauma prevention. Please provide current CV’s for all investigators.
3. The scientific merits of the study, including a well-developed research hypothesis, a well-designed methodology(including control and test groups), and provisions for careful statistical analysis.
4. The likelihood of successful completion of the project, including a timeline.
5. A detailed budget for the research project.
6. The prospect of publication for the study in a leading peer review journal.
