Job Description

The Adult Trauma Service provides a horizontal multidisciplinary approach in caring for the adult trauma patient through a continuum of care-encompassing pre-hospital care, resuscitation, stabilization, restorative care, rehabilitation and re-integration into family and society. A two-tier algorithm specifically differentiates the trauma patients whose injuries warrant mobilization of the full trauma team from those whose injuries can be managed by receiving “expedited care” from the Emergency Department staff.
The Division of Adult Trauma has a core group of five trauma/surgical intensivists, who maintain responsibility for clinical pathways and processes of care, and provide 24-hour in-house trauma attending coverage. A trauma program manager and two trauma registrars supplement the functions of the trauma program.
The Adult Trauma Performance Improvement/Injury Prevention Coordinator will assist the Trauma Program Manager by planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating performance improvement activities and injury prevention initiatives for the Adult Trauma Service utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. This position requires clinical knowledge of trauma care across the continuum, and the ability to analyze data to improve outcomes for our trauma patients. Theoretical knowledge of program development and effective organizational skills for project management are essential qualities of the successful candidate.
Requirements
Education
• Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited school of nursing
Knowledge
• Knowledge of nursing theory, practice and research commensurate with a basic degree in nursing
• Knowledge of trauma nursing care across the continuum
• Knowledge of current guidelines and research in optimal care of trauma patients
Skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
• Effective organizational skills necessary for project management
• Effective interpersonal and written communication skills to establish working relationships with multidisciplinary groups
• Ability to work with culturally diverse community groups
• Ability to analyze complex data from medical records, and enter it into the Collector trauma registry and Outcomes databases
Work Experience
• Registered nurse licensure in the State of Maryland
• Advanced certification and CEN, TNCC, ATCN, CCRN preferred
• 3-5 years nursing experience in direct care of trauma patients in a critical care setting.
• Evidence of project management experience with multidisciplinary groups.
• Evidence of involvement in injury prevention activities.
Position Description
Program Development
• Makes recommendations to Trauma Program Manager related to performance improvement and injury prevention activities.
• Participates in hospital, community, and State endeavors to promote injury prevention.
• Participates in Performance Improvement activities for the Adult Trauma Service.
• Plans injury prevention activities on behalf of the Adult Trauma Service.
Program Maintenance/Performance Improvement
1. Monitors care provided to trauma inpatients through daily rounds.
2. Enters inpatient data into Trauma Registry.
3. Identifies appropriate patients for inclusion in Trauma Multidisciplinary Mortality and Morbidity Conferences.
4. Attends Multidisciplinary Adult Trauma Performance Improvement Committee meetings.
5. Provides feedback to pre-hospital providers around issues of trauma care.
6. Enters performance improvement data into Outcomes Registry.
7. Performs Alcohol Screening and Brief Interventions for Adult Trauma Service In-patients.
Education
1. Provides injury prevention education to patients, as well as hospital, and community groups.
2. Educates health care providers on performance improvement initiatives.
Research
1. Prepares reports based on trauma registry data.
2. Participates in departmental research projects.
