Trauma Survivors Network Courses

Courses in the Trauma Survivors Network are given periodically to trauma centers and other hospitals interested in joining the Trauma Survivors Network. Like many other ATS courses, these are also being developed in online format.

Introduction to the Trauma Survivors Network

The 4-hour Introduction to the Trauma Survivors Network is designed for all medical disciplines—physicians, nurses, social workers, and pastoral care counselors—in trauma centers interested in joining and implementing the Trauma Survivors Network program in their facility. The course includes discussion on:

  • The 6 components of the TSN
  • Interactive discussions of the value of TSN and how to implement it in a hospital setting
  • Interviews (live or videotaped) with trauma survivors who have gone on to become Peer Visitors
  • Engaging support for your TSN Program from all key stakeholders in relevant hospital departments
  • How to engage and train peer volunteers
  • Training volunteers in HIPAA and other confidentiality laws and policies
  • Working with rehabilitation facilities to implement portions of TSN
  • How to share resources with other trauma and hospital facilities in your geographic area
  • Guided interactive tours of the two related websites, traumasurvivorsnetwork.org, and nextstepsonline.org, and

Engaging Peer Visitors

This 2-hour webinar-based course focuses on building a solid peer visitation program and peer support groups in your TSN Program. Issues involving recruiting peer, training, debriefing, supervising, and “benching” peer visitors are discussed in an open and interactive format. This course is scheduled periodically for trauma centers implementing the Peer Visitation portion of the TSN Program.

NextSteps Self-Management

NextSteps, the self-management portion of the TSN, was developed in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. It is provided to trauma survivors in either live class format (8 sessions over 8 weeks) or through a new online version.

NextSteps training for trauma personnel implementing TSN involves a thorough overview of the course and the principles of self-management training that underlie it. NextSteps courses are given upon request by trauma centers about to implement this portion of the TSN Program.
