Since our founding in l968, the ATS has led the fight for nationwide quality trauma care. Our dual goals were, as the are today (1) to prevent injury and trauma; and (2) when trauma does occur, to ensure that the injured victim is cared for by the “right people, in the right place, at the right time.” This means that the nation must have trauma systems to properly manage the prevention of injury and the care of the trauma victim.
The ATS was an original advocate for the l973 EMS Act which established the first federal program that builds EMS/Trauma systems. In l984-5 ATS worked with Congress to develop a new trauma program. This effort culminated in the passage of the l990 Trauma Systems Development Act. Today ATS is working for the renewal of this Act.
